Cell Biology Manager – Plant Transformation

The Cell Biology Manager will be responsible for managing and developing a high performing plant transformation team that produces new consumer-oriented products according to timelines and quality specifications. This individual will also drive and implement a culture of continuous improvement including workflow management, method optimization and the application of cutting-edge technologies to generate gene-edited plants.


The successful candidate will lead a team of research associates to transform and select genome edited plants. The manager will also coordinate with colleagues across vector construction, technology development, genotyping, controlled environments and project management. S/he will also have a unique opportunity to interact with the discovery, breeding and regulatory teams as Calyxt gene edited products progress through the R&D pipeline towards commercialization.

  • Manage and develop a high performing plant transformation team: recruit, hire mentor, coach, evaluate and develop direct reports.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to produce high quality results and meet project timelines.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of new approaches to improve plant transformation and high-throughput production of gene edited crops.
  • Oversee experiments and develop methods according to standard operating procedures.
  • Monitor and document project status and project completion.
  • Maintain an organized and safe laboratory working environment.
  • Masters or PhD in plant science or related field.
  • Experience working with multiple transformation methods such as Agrobacterium, biolistic and protoplast transfection.
  • Three years minimum of relevant people management experience in an industrial or academic setting.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment to achieve project goals.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills including data analysis and process troubleshooting.
  • Experience transforming both dicot and monocot species.
  • Successful track record building high-performing teams in a dynamic environment.
