Description

Calyxt is seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented plant breeder to join our R&D organization. The Plant Breeding Director will be responsible for the development, implementation and success of one or more plant breeding/trait introgression programs which include but are not limited to Hemp, Oats, Peanuts, Tomato, Potato, Soybean, Wheat, and Pulse crops. The incumbent will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to develop and advance first-generation gene-edited products in order to deliver on Calyxt’s innovative healthy food and ingredient platform.

Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, management, and support to the breeding team.
  • Develop, implement, and manage a plant breeding and trait introgression programs in one or more crops.
  • Set strategy for short- and long- term goals.
  • Manage a field and controlled environment testing program for one or more crops.
  • Analysis and interpretation of genotypic and phenotypic data to make selection decisions.
  • Collaborate with scientists and others in the Gene Editing and Controlled Growth Environment teams to ensure a seamless handoff of first-generation gene editing products for breeding, evaluation, and increase.
  • Manage relationships with external parties for implementation of field trials and disease screenings.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in plant breeding, genetics, molecular breeding, or a related field
  • 7-10+ years of industry experience in leading a plant breeding program.
  • Experience in quantitative genetics is required.
  • Experience in the design and execution of a trait introgression program is preferred.
  • A strong background in molecular breeding techniques including MATS, MAIC, and GWS.
  • Proven experience in the design and execution of field and greenhouse experiments.
  • Knowledge and experience in plant breeding experimental designs and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to lead and develop employees in plant breeding disciplines to enhance their work performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a collaborative cross-functional team environment.
  • Work with urgency and able to simultaneously manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, when needed (15%-20%).
